Passpack Password Manager
I’ve been reading the PassPack blog with growing fascination. PassPack is an online password manager.
Until now personal password management has takent two approaches:
- Use a handful of passwords over and over again on multiple sites. A lot of users do this since it’s the only way to keep all your passwords in your head. It’s also incredibly stupid.
- Use a password manager. Usually an application you download that keeps all your passwords encrypted and protected by a single password that you do remember
PassPack takes a different approach with an online password manager. Of cour the first question that leaps to mind is one of trust. Who are you that I can give you all my passwords safely? PassPack answers with: Who Are You People Anyway.
It’s interesting that PassPack promises to encrypt the data before it leaves your computer and collects no email or other personal info that can be traced back to you. In theory this means that even if the PassPack server is hacked your data will be useless to the hackers.
So far I’m impressed with PassPack. You need to remember just three pieces of data to access your password list - your userid (don’t use anything that ties back to your personal identity), your user password and a passphrase for the double encryption.
And now that you are saing all your passwords you might as well use high quality ones from a password generator like SafePasswd.com. Choose ‘All Characters’ and a length of 16 to get some really strong passwords.

Hi there. I’m Tara from PassPack - just wanted to let you know that the next release will also include a strong password generator as well.
Thanks for the kind words. Cheers!
