Do Follow - Let Your Comments Free
Why are commenters web site URLs set to be no-follow links automatically by most blog software?
Well the idea is to reduce comment spam by eliminating the motivation for spamming in the first place - ie: the link juice. Nice, logical idea. The problem is, it doesn’t work. As all bloggers know, you will still get comment spammed like crazy and only a good filter like Spam Karma or Aksimet can save you. So back to my original question - why set comment links to be no-follow? Since comments need to be accepted by the blogger (either manually or implicitly with spam filtering), the blogger is saying that he accepts/respects the commenter which similar to what he does when he links to them. You can change your blogging software to let the comment links be follow-able either thru hacking the software, or for Wordpress you can install the DoFollow WP Plugin. I have done that on this blog, so now if you comment and leave your URL in your comment, you will get a follow link to your blog. I will moderate the comments by hand, however, so spammers go away. Thanks to Healthy Web Design for the idea.

Hey David, thanks for the link. Spread the word. I’d like to build some momentum on this topic. Thanks to anyone who links.
I am really thinking of getting this plugin on my site. Might be something I need to do this weekend.
[…] do follow movement has really ramped up and there are a lot of people participating. If you haven’t jumped […]
I love this plugin
Really a good crusade to go on with

Is it worth the junk comments you have to filter? How many people a week would you say drop by just because you are dofollow?
ps.
You’ve got some xhtml errors you can fix easy, ditch the img align=”left/right” and use style=”float: left/right;”
