Daily Blog Tips has a new Blog Project encouraging bloggers to write about their past blogging mistake. Daily Blog Tips is a great resource for any blogger and I’m sure every blogger has done some things that, in retrospect, weren’t such a great idea.
For me the worst mistake was to spend too much time looking for linkbacks. Going around the blogosphere, begging for links and watching your inbound count is time-consuming and the truth is it is not time well spent. If you look at the big blogs, you quickly see that they spend all their time writing, not link whoring.
The time gets spent either way, but time spent writing leads to more content (more searchable content) and more interest in your blog. After all, isn’t it better to get a link from a true, for real, bottom of the heart kind of reason than just for the purpose of exchanging Google juice?

Links are good, and if you want to monetize your archives, then it is important to be ranked well by Google. Yet, I agree it is a mistake to spend too much time on this, when you can rather try to write some good linkbaits.

[…] Spending Too Much Time Link-Begging by David Paul […]
Great post David. I remember going after links myself, but eventually developing other approaches to doing so versus asking / begging. Group writing projects like Daily Blog Tips is a great example - or “strategic linking” over to people’s blogs that you want attention from, but you’re not going to beg for…
Good luck!
I don’t even bother asking for links. That’s definitely too much hard work for little payoff.
