The Mac Mail Client Meme
Suddenly every single Mac blogger is talking about why Apple’s own Mail.app doesn’t quite meet their needs and how it would be great if someone wrote an email client for ‘Pros’. And now lots of programmers may scurry off to write a Mail client for the Mac (just as we saw a sudden surge of GTD apps).
Lots of great thoughtful articles have sprung up on this topic. The best may be this advice to a would-be Mail replacement programmer:
Think about how a programmer’s email client would be different from the standard. Maybe it does syntax highlighting. Maybe you can apply patches people send you with one click. Maybe you can create bugzilla issues from an email with one click. Or collaborate on a support email with the SubEthaEngine. Nobody but programmers will want to use that client, but that’s fine - there are lots of programmers. Now what about music and video editors? Graphic designers? See where I’m going?
